So you still haven't maxed out to Obama, it's getting close to crunch time, and, if you're like me, when you have a little money, you buy books, and if there's anything left over, you get some food.
Did you know you can have your new books and donate to Obama too?
now put down that book long enough to follow me after the flip...
A friend sent me a link to the Obama fundraising page ofAyelet Waldman, the author of "Love and Other Impossible Pursuits" and the Mommy Track Mysteries. Waldman is married to Hugo and Pulizter winner, Michael Chabon.
She began a fundraising project, Books 4 Barack. You contribute $250 or more through her fundraising page and you'll get a 'mystery bag' with ten books donated by various writers who are supporting Obama/Biden.
You can read all the details and the ever-growing list of writers who are contributing to the fundraiser over there.
But just to intrigue you all, here's a partial list:
Ursula LeGuin. Dave Eggers. Elizabeth George. Garrison Keillor. Stephen King. Jonathan Lethem. And on and and on and on. The list is growing too. It's spreading thru the liberal side of the SF/F community tonight, and I've already heard that George R R Martin is sending a box of books in, and other New Mexican writers are digging thru their closets and bookshelves tonight looking for that last copy of a rare first edition or their latest paperbacks to donate.
Now, you don't get to choose the books you get. It's a grab bag of wonders and delights put together by Ayelet and Michael and (I hope) a few friends and volunteers. But what a mix of surprises and new discoveries and cherished rarities you could receive in return for a donation. Do you have any idea of how hard it is to get King to sign anything these days?
So, go on, clean out the sofa cushions, dig around in the glove box of your car, put off buying that new box set of Gomer Pyle DVDs, and indulge yourself in doing good, contributing to the Obama campaign as they look to budgeting out the last month + of expenses, while you get some new books, signed by the authors who donated them.
Me, I'm emptying the old Mason jars of spare change and will be donating thru the Books 4 Barack site as soon as I get the check book wrestled into balance.
(after mumblety-mumblety years here, this is my first diary. So forgive me tag patrol and diary police, I did my best. This opportunity was too good to keep to myself).
PS: and don't forget to drop by the YA writers/readers Obama group for some great reading, ideas and discussions for people of all ages.
