So, there is a new story out on the New York Times. There is a group of 33 ministers who are intentionally breaking tax laws and campaign laws. This is the kind of 'amping up the base' we can expect from Palin I guess. I shouldn't be too surprised. Follow me over the folder while we discuss the ramifications of this issue, which go far beyond freedom of speech, or taxes, or campaign issues.
Here is the link to the article from the NYT. The group of ministers is backed by a group called the Alliance Defense Fund, which is a group of Christian lawyers devoted to conservative and religious causes. They are hoping to use this as a means to challenge the laws around this issue.
I see this as a multi-pronged attacked on the separation of church and state. Given the recent changes in the SCOTUS, and the reductions in force in the IRS, and the other distractions (like the war in the Middle East, the calamity on Wall Street, and the upcoming election), it seems likely they are trying to sneak one in on us. They are also using the last 7+ years of government decimation as a fall back and a team to insure that they will not be stopped. At least not before this election is over.
Now, I'm all for Obama, and I have been since he announced his candidacy, but I do have a concern here. If something was to get 'reinterpreted' by this looney tunes SCOTUS, would Obama and the impending Democratic majority (possibly a super-majority?) have the guts to overturn that? And how would the Republican minority spin it?
We had better be ready for attacks like this against the underpinnings of our government.
