I am afraid that we are all facing the blowback from a President who has cried wolf once too many times.
This fable attributed to Aesopand about a bored shepherd boy who entertained himself by calling out "wolf". Villagers who came to his rescue found that the alarms were false and that they had wasted their time. When the boy was actually confronted by a wolf, the villagers did not believe his cries for help. The moral is stated at the end of the fable as:
Even when liars tell the truth, they are never believed. The liar will lie once, twice, and then perish when he tells the truth.
This is where we are at. We have a "Leader" who has made us cynical because he is untrustworthy. We are facing perhaps the worst financial crisis in world history and we are absolutely divided as to whether this is true or not.
The lies, the deceptions, the stunts and "product roll outs" have divided our nation and diluted the awesome power of the Presidency to accomplish great things during times of crisis and danger.
Is there really a dangerous financial crisis that threatens our very way of life? Are we on the brink of a economic abyss that threatens to undermine our nation for years or even decades? Who know? Who can trust this President who has cried wolf one too many time.
Here it is, the first and most toxic lie that undermined not just this Presidency...but perhaps our future.
But of course it wasn't the only lie. In fact that is the problem for the congress leadership on both sides. It's not just politics but the fact that no one can decipher whether this is real or cynical political season hype.
