I'm seriously about to fall asleep but I just came across this and I've got to make sure someone sees it and does a proper diary on it. it's a blog post up by Debra Dickerson at Mother Jones.
The specific article address is:
http://www.motherjones.com/...
It is positively bone-chilling
So I'm just doing this little diary because I think this could be an incredibly important thing and it is intensely disturbing - whether or not McCain were running for president - this would be a scandal of massive proportions. Since it seems there's something to it - i think it was first reported in The Nation - it might be time for us in the blogosphere to talk about it and put pressure on the mainstream media not to run away from this. Maybe there's already something up here, but I'm kind of guessing if there were, it would be on the recommendend list. Here's a little quote from a original expose, by Sydney Schanberg, that she discusses in the posting
There exists a telling mass of official documents, radio intercepts, witness depositions, satellite photos of rescue symbols that pilots were trained to use, electronic messages from the ground containing the individual code numbers given to airmen, a rescue mission by a Special Forces unit that was aborted twice by Washington and even sworn testimony by two defense secretaries that "men were left behind." This imposing body of evidence suggests that a large number—probably hundreds—of the US prisoners held in Vietnam were not returned when the peace treaty was signed in January 1973 and Hanoi released 591 men, among them Navy combat pilot John S. McCain.
it seems there's been a massive, decades-long cover-up, and dickerson's piece is appropriately emotional about it, and also calls out the msm for being potentially too terrified of the story/intimidated to touch it. She also takes pains to make sure Sarah Palin doesn't think she's not also obligated to discuss this, answer questions about it, etc. Anyway. Seriously, holy shit is that story intense.
Over and out. I'll delete this in the morning if I've screwed with some protocol about diary postings or something.
And by the way, for those of you who aren't familiar with her, Debra Dickerson is totally awesome. I'm sure a bunch of you have seen her on the Colbert Report, she's been on a few times, I think; she and stephen have great chemistry, but the point is she's got other good writing up at mother jones.
UPDATE: Here's the original post on the subject
