Note: The following is a wonderful figment of the diarist's imagination.
Tom Brokaw: "Senator Obama, The McCain campaign has stated that for the last 30 days of this election season, they are going negative, how do you respond to that?"
Senator Obama:"You know in March, McCain’s campaign manager Rick Davis sent out a memo to reporters on how his campaign would be run. Davis stated and I quote:
'It is critical, as we prepare to face off with whomever the Democrats select as their nominee, that we all follow John's lead and run a respectful campaign focused on the issues and values that are important to the American people.'
It appears now that McCain has gone back on his word. Now he is using the same vile tactics that Karl Rove used to attack him and his family back in 2000. Why?
Because the McCain campaign is in a hurry to turn the page on the economy and use the politics of distraction, by attacking my integrity and my character. They are running from this administration’s 8 years of disastrous economic policies and have no solutions for getting us out of this mess.
You know it’s interesting, a few months they ran ads saying I was the world’s greatest celebrity along with Paris Hilton and Britney Spears. A few days later I was the "ONE", they even flashed a picture of Moses on the screen. Well, Senator McCain, you can’t have it both ways. I can’t be a celebrity and "palling around with terrorists". I can’t be a radical Muslim AND a radical Christian. Folks, this is silly season.
With 7 houses and 13 cars, McCain can probably afford to turn the page on the economy and resort to these silly attacks. The American people can’t. Not when we are involved in two wars. Not when millions are losing their homes. Not when we are in the midst of the greatest financial crisis since the Depression. Not when we have lost 159,000 jobs last month alone.
It seems to me that McCain would whether run from the economy than lose the election.
At a time when Americans are looking to us for leadership, the McCain campaign is going to throw the kitchen sink at me. Well, I would like to say to the American people, that I will not be swiftboated. I will fight back. The stakes are too high in this election for me not to.
I will sit at the kitchen table with the American people and get this economy back on track. You deserve a president that will not distract you from the urgent issues facing this nation, but will face them head on. That is why I am running for President of the United States."
Brokaw: "Senator McCain, would you like to respond?"
John McCain:
