Politics has re-entered the silly season it seems. Or at the very least, the news media has entered a silly season in bringing this up. According to an article from the Press Association (the national news association for Great Britain), Sarah Palin is a 10th cousin to the deceased Princess of Wales, Diana.
Okay, first it is the British Press bringing this up, rather than the American press. They tend to dwell on things like this. However, I can definitely see Palin using this to her advantage. "Vote for me! I'm a cousin to Princess Diana! And to FDR as well, and we all love FDR, right?" (The rest of the Republican Party would be grinding their teeth at mention of FDR, seeing that he's the Great Satan that they've been trying to cast down for 60 years now.)
For some bizarre reason, Americans are fascinated by Princess Diana. There is also a tendency among some people to vote not for the best candidate, but the one they like the most. Hell, Obama is where he is because he's charismatic, more than because he had the best ideas. Don't get me wrong... Obama has some great ideas, he's constantly seeing what other people have to say and if they've a better idea than him, he'll integrate those ideas into his own mindset. (That, by the way, is one of the primary reasons I'm voting for him. He is willing to admit he's wrong and change his views on a topic when the facts prove him wrong. I'd rather have someone smart and willing to change than someone too stubborn to admit he or she is mistaken.)
We could very well see people voting for McCain in the hopes that he doesn't live out his four years... and that they'll get their very own Princess in the White House. And she'd "reach out to both sides as she's got FDR's blood in her veins as well" (or so they'd delude themselves).
Sadly, as stupid as this may be... I remember a similar news article a few months back where Obama's lineage was revealed. Sadly, I don't recall the URL for that article, but it shows that the news media has lost its mind and is willing to delve into the inane and insane rather than focus on things that truly matter.
