Imagine if you woke up one of these next few days and found out that Palin had to "withdraw" from the race because of blah-blah, and McCain then had picked Mittens as his VP.
- Would McCain perform another shocking gimmick by dumping Palin in order to have a chance at winning? What other tricks does he have left in his bag at this point?
- Should we push that rhetoric now before McCain does it? Should we say that he should dump her, so that to cancel out the effect of that move?
- Should we push that rhetoric, especially now after Troopergate results, knowing that most likely he won't dump her, and therefore by pushing the rhetoric and saying that he should dump her we manage to throw him a bit off the attack mode and make his campaign defend and or explain why they won't dump Palin?
I am not certain, but I lean towards Nr 3. What do you think?
It would be extremely risky for him to consider dumping her now at this stage of the race, but hey, wasn't everyone shocked when he picked her in the first place? And that was one of the points of picking her, to shock everyone, to dramatically change the focus of the campaign from the historical and stellar Obama's nomination and speech to the "what did McCain just do?!". Now mcCain is even more desperate to change the focus of the presidential campaign from the economy and the polls to something else, anything, preferably to something about him that would make him look good, or at least better than he does now.
I still think even having that in mind, he figures the blowback from the conservative base would probably outweigh the gimmick effect and any gains to be had from replacing an incompetent Palin with a Mittens. But either way I think it would be a good tactical move to try to push the rhetoric out there that McCain should dump Palin now. The results of the Troopergate investigation provide another reason for it, and hopefully a possibility that this rhetoric would gain some momentum in the media. If a few talking heads on TV get to discus it, it would be good, and if it goes as far as some reporters asking the campaign or McCain himself about it, it would be great. The last thing the McCain campaign wants to do now is to be forced by the media in a corner where they have to talk about that and why McCain won't even consider doing such a thing. Most people think she's not ready anyhow, so they loose even if they have to defend her in that prospect.
