My good friend Colonel Jill Morgenthaler is the Democratic candidate for Congress from the Sixth District of Illinois. She’s running a strong campaign to unseat Congressman Peter Roskam. Those of us from Illinois know how extreme and how wrong Roskam is on almost every issue that matters to our nation – his support of Bush’s failed policies in Iraq, Bush’s giveaways to oil companies, and of course the deregulation that led to chaos on Wall Street.
Yet it’s Congressman Roskam’s record on a woman’s right to choose that is truly extreme. He opposes a woman’s right to an abortion with NO EXCEPTIONS – not if a woman is raped, not if a girl is the victim of incest and not if the life of the woman is at stake. Roskam is one of the main sponsors of HR 618, the so-called “Right to Life Act” and of HR 4157, “The Sanctity of Human Life Act”, both of which would impose a complete ban on all abortions by defining every fertilized egg as a complete human being at the moment of fertilization.
The dangers of this bill to women’s privacy rights are obvious. But there are also less apparent dangers lurking under the surface – in the Act’s sweeping, vague language. Consider this fact: if life begins at fertilization, then every couple using in vitro fertilization to start their family will be forced to carry every fertilized egg to term, or find another woman who will. Often up to 15 eggs are fertilized in the in vitro process. Does this sound crazy to you, too?
Well, it does to Jill. Her campaign has produced a short, humorous video which takes a tongue-in-cheek look at this serious issue. It pokes fun at Roskam’s scary vision for our country. But we should never forget just how dangerous it really is. And that’s exactly why we need to elect my friend Col. Jill Morgenthaler to Congress in November.
Please check out the video below. Pass it along to all your friends, and visit Jill’s campaign at www.jillmorgenthaler.com. Peter Roskam's positions are too extreme. Jill needs your help to defeat him. Please consider contributing to the campaign.
