I apologize for this short diary, but this is important. Did you catch The Daily Show's intro last night? Jon Stewart showed a clip that could potentially destroy McSame and Miss Wasilla. I looked on You Tube, but they don't have it up yet. Here's the deal.
You know how McSame and his sidekick are going around the country attacking Obama's tax policies as Socialism? How increasing taxes slightly on the wealthy is "class warfare" and how "spreading the wealth" is worse than communism? Well, Jon Stewart showed a clip of a McCain town hall session in which high school students (I believe high school) were asking him questions about his own plan to increase taxes for the wealthy. This was obviously during the time when he was against the Bush tax cuts for the richest 2% of Americans. A young lady asked (paraphrasing) that her dad was a hard working doctor and why should he have to pay higher taxes to help others, and wasn't this approaching socialism? John McCain answered with a chuckle that there was nothing wrong with those more fortunate who had become wealthy in this country paying a little more in taxes.
I don't know how or where the Daily Show scored that tape, but Obama should get it immediately and use it from now until Nov. 4th. It not only shows what a hypocritical flip flopper McCain is, how he sold his soul to the devil to win the nomination, but it makes the exact same point that Obama is making, that this country was founded on the idea of progressive taxation!
If anyone finds the You Tube video of this, feel free to embed. So far, I haven't found it.
My hero:
Update: Thanks for the corrections, yall. Our country was not founded on the principals of progressive taxation, as was pointed out by several outstanding Kossacks.
In 1862, in order to support the Civil War effort, Congress enacted the nation's first income tax law. It was a forerunner of our modern income tax in that it was based on the principles of graduated, or progressive, taxation and of withholding income at the source. During the Civil War, a person earning from $600 to $10,000 per year paid tax at the rate of 3%. Those with incomes of more than $10,000 paid taxes at a higher rate.
The student who asked the question to McCain was a university student. Thanks for the info.
