Christina Bellantoni headed over to an early voting location near the Obama rally in Fayetteville, NC on Sunday and shot some videos:
Most seemed to be Obama supporters and several had come from the rally. Nearly all the voters were black.
Also at the polling site was a group of loud and angry protesters who shouted and mocked the voters as they walked in. Nearly all were white.
As you can see from these videos, no one held anything back. People were shouting about Obama's acknowledged cocaine use as a young man, abortion and one man used the word "terrorist." They also were complaining that Sundays are for church, not voting.
I guess the hecklers must have just come from church themselves. Or perhaps they were on their way to church and stopped for a little Sunday destroying the fabric of democracy.
Most voters in line ignored the hecklers but a few heckled back. One black woman told me she was deeply saddened to see people protesting the most fundamental right of democracy.
I also spoke to a McCain supporter who was voting early even though he also had been protesting across the street.
Maverick alert!
Sunday was the same day Colin Powell announced his endorsement of Obama on national television. One of the hecklers was prepared with his reaction:
"I felt like somebody stabbed me in the heart. I thought he was a smart man, a man of character and judgment."
The McCain supporter said he once respected Mr. Powell so much that he would have voted for him for president. But now he held a sign saying: "Wrong on WMD, wrong on Obama."
My, how quickly the tides turn. How disappointing to find out on Meet the Press that a man you thought possessed sturdiness of character and judgment is actually a turncoat. That would just suck.
