According to the campaign of Jason Kander of Kansas City, threatening mail has been received by Pro-Obama households in Kansas City.
They report that "neighbors saw people walking the neighborhoods writing down the addresses of homes with Obama signs" and then the mail started arriving. This is in a relatively affluent area of Kansas City that is generally pro-Obama, where McCain/Palin signs adorn a few homes where people certainly would benefit from McCain's increasingly regressive tax proposals. It is also an area where Obama campaign signs were defacedwith Swastiksas, the hammer and sickle, and "USSR".
Described as a 'battleground state' Missouri has been heating up lately with organized attacks, such as mailings from the Missouri Republican State Committee proclaiming Obama to be a terrorist, to grass-roots attacks against property and apparently now against people.
This letter was received with no addressee name, just a street address. It was unsigned and had no return address. Whoever sent it was either ashamed of what they were doing, or afraid to stand publicly and claim ownership of this action. While the Kander campaign forwarded it as an example of thuggery, you have to decide for yourself if it was threatening:
The text of the letter is as follows:
Would YOU make a donation to a Kansas City abortion clinic? If your answer is yes then YOU would be an accomplice to murdering unborn babies.
Would YOU help a Doctor perform an abortion? All YOU would have to do is prepare the mother and hand the doctor the instruments to be an accomplice to murdering unborn babies.
if YOU vote for a ploitician (sic) who is Pro/Choice (sic), YOU would be an accomplice to murdering unborn babies. 5000 babies are murdered a day.
PSALMS 94:20 Does GOD condemn the innocent to death ? NO!!!
Rev. 22:15 Outside heaven are all immoral, and murders and all liars.
Hebrews 9:27 After YOU die then comes the judgement(sic).
DON'T LET THIS BLOOD BE ON YOUR HANDS
While I am not a biblical scholar, apparently this is typical mis-quoting.
PSALMS 94:20 says "Shall the throne of iniquity have fellowship with thee, which frameth mischief by a law? " This is variously interpreted to mean that laws cannot be used to shelter to protect immoral behavior.
Rev. 22:15 says "For without are dogs, and sorcerers, and fornicators, and murderers, and idolaters, and whoever loves and makes a lie"
and
Hebrews 9:27 says "Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment"
This last part might be construed as threatening. But who metes out the judgment? Clearly the people who mailed this letter are judging by association anyone who has an Obama sign on their lawn.
But is it fair to assume that anyone who displays an Obama campaign sign is anti-choice? I have one Catholic neighbor who displays and Obama campaign sign and has for months. Are they condemned by their commitment to the future of their children?
Kansas City has a strong anti-choice movement, although their numbers are not great. It is part of the city versus rural divide that characterized politics in the 'Paris-of-the-Plains.' They seem to have reached for a new low in their efforts to tar voters who support candidates who do not meet their approval.
