Yep, it's true. I'm a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
This has been a source of contention between my mother and me for many years. While I am proud of the historical research that she has done, and yes, I am pleased to know that my ancestor fought in the American Revolution, I have long been appalled at the DAR's history of racism and involvement in right-wing causes. The only reason I am a member is because she pays my dues, every year. I refuse to. To this day I escort my mother to DAR activities (because I am a Good Girl), and to this day, I find them to be overwhelmingly right-wing. I am more than willing to be corrected if some of you out there have had other experiences.
HOWEVER. (ahem) I have found my DAR membership to be of great use here lately. When writing little notes to luminaries such as Michele Bachmann and Elizabeth Dole, detailing my contributions to their opponents, it gives me great credibility to start out saying, I am a member of the DAR.
Wanna call me anti-American now, Michele? I do believe I just pwned you.
Any other progressive DAR members out there? Anywhere? Bueller?
