I just love my wife. Yesterday I was heading out the door with my 6 year-old daughter to shop for groceries while her younger sister napped. My wife asked us on the way out, "oh, hey - could you possibly stop by the republican HQ and pick up the pictures for the school?" Being the community-involved person she is, she had offered to put up an election display at the elementary school library, where she volunteers weekly. We had lots of Obama schwag, but not much from the other guys.
So, no problem - kiddo and I headed up to Escondido to knock that out first. (If you're wondering, we're Show-Me transplants in California on a temporary basis...) When we got to the place, there was quite a throng of red-shirted people hanging about outside, 40 or so - we found that Rep. Brian Bilbray (R CA-50) had just visited there. People were a little harsh to us, it seemed - I mean, I don't look too much like a Dirty Fucking Hippie, and I thought I even heard a couple of the redshirts muttering "idiot", but wasn't sure at whom it was directed.
There were a couple of nice older ladies there who helped us round up some photos and stuff, after I explained what we were looking for and why. So, we headed out as quickly as we came, and went around the corner to where the car was parked. It was there that I realized that I was flying Obama colors big and bold when we went on that little errand. My wife and kids had gifted me with a "Yes We Can" t-shirt on my birthday (like I said, I love my wife.) I had put it on yesterday specifically in order to spread the love at the grocery, where I figured there would be a lot of Saturday afternoon shoppers.
So, the t-shirt is getting one more day of wear before we wash the whites - we're going out to a kid's hallowe'en thingie at the Wild Animal Park this afternoon. We've also got a fistful of stickers we're going to take, so maybe we can pass some around. One nice thing about this campaign season is that we're finally learning who the liberals are in our 'hood - for southern California, we live in quite a conservative area, which kind of sucks. To all the North County San Diegans out there, help us out a bit - we're new here and need to find community! We took one for the team yesterday!
