On May 25, 1961, Robert Kennedy did an address exclusively for Voice of America on race relations in America.
In that speech Kennedy said, "Things are moving so fast in race relations a Negro could be president in 40 years."
Kennedy was almost right on the money.
Unfortunately, according to the chief librarian of the Voice of America the tape of the address is lost, however, it was written about by a journalist at the time and that account can be found on a video documentary entitled, "Excerpts in Rights for Americans: The Speeches of Robert F. Kennedy," (MPI Home Video, 1990).
(Note, this is from a friend of mine, Linda C., who is in charge of a college library in South Carolina. I send her things from DKos and she asked me to share this with you all.)
In other news, my father secured two tickets to see Barack Obama today in Canton, Ohio. They were limited to two tickets each. He and Grandpa Harold will be going together. Dad said that he had to wait in line an hour and a half, but it was worth it. He said that a black man was offering 100 dollars to everyone leaving with tickets--he said he needed 6 tickets so that he could take his children "to see the next President."
Dad said, "he was probably gonna sell em' for 200 dollars." I admonished him slightly and said, "Maybe he's just proud and really wants to share a moment with his family, like I want to share one with you and Grandpa."
Dad said, "Yeah, you're probably right."
Teaching moments are abundant folks, use them or lose them.
Now Dad was told not to bring any cameras, no bottles (plastic or otherwise) as they will be confiscated. He said that there was a man who looked like secret service watching everyone who was being given a ticket. Security seems to be tightening now folks.
I hope to see them on CNN's ballot bowl waving a sign today at 12:30. If anyone is in Canton, let me know.
