Some days you open the Opinion pages and what you read leaves you speechless. Check out this letter in today's Louisville Courier-Journal about Mitch McConnell's smear tactics. There are few people in America who know better than this letter-writer what the dishonorable Republican smear machine can do, and he pulls no punches calling Mitch McConnell on it:
Four years ago, I saw how low the Republican attack machine would stoop in pursuit of power when they used veterans to attack me personally.
I said after that election that I would never again let them get away with it. And now that they're using the same dirty tactics in Kentucky, I'm calling them out on it.
Scared by polls that show the race one of the closest in the country, Mitch McConnell is attacking his opponent, National Guard and Army Reserve veteran Bruce Lunsford, in some really despicable and malicious ads.
Not only are McConnell's ads completely dishonest and dishonorable, they are also incredibly hypocritical: Mitch McConnell voted against Sen. Jim Webb's new GI Bill, and defeated other pro-veteran bills as Minority Leader. It takes a lot of nerve for someone with McConnell's record to attack anyone else's commitment to our veterans.
Let's send a message to Mitch McConnell that no level of political desperation can excuse this level of dishonorable conduct. Mitch McConnell has failed our veterans, and he's failed the American people -- we must make sure he pays for this failure.
Please help defeat Mitch McConnell by supporting Bruce Lunsford's campaign for the U.S. Senate. With your help, we can put an end to the politics of smears and fears.
JOHN F. KERRY
U.S. Senate
Washington 20005
Senator Kerry knows what it's like to have false attacks lobbed by those who'd exploit veterans for political gain. This sort of trashy gutter politics has to stop.
Please join Senator Kerry and Bruce Lunsford in repudiating the dishonorable campaign Mitch McConnell has run, and stand against obstructionism in the new Senate, by supporting Bruce Lunsford's campaign.
We can't let Mitch get away with this stuff for another six years. It's time for a change.
