Here in California, many Asian Americans, gay and straight, are working together to say NO on Proposition 8, which would ban gay marriage. They include not only elected officials but leaders from the community and the film industry; from state Controller John Chiang to local school board members, from parents and grassroots leaders to well-known actors like George Takei and John Cho.
We've also organized local coalitions like API Equality-LA, working to increase support in the Asian American community for gay marriage. http://www.apiequalityla.org/
When so many Asian Americans speak out for equality and justice for all Californians, it makes me proud to call myself a part of it. Here's to victory on November 4th -- Barack and No on 8!
Following are some videos of prominent Asian Americans speaking out:
Father speaking about how Prop 8 would hurt his family:
Actor John Cho speaking against Prop 8:
Well-known California political leader Judy Chu speaking against Prop 8:
And last, but definitely not least, George Takei talks about his own marriage with his life partner:
UPDATE: Oh, and since George Takei and John Cho are the once and future Sulus of the Star Trek franchise, may marriage equality live long and prosper!
