No, this diary does not endorse violence against anyone, not even Republicans.
The Republican Party is like a three legged stool. You have the Hawks, the Wall Streeters, and the Social Cons. These groups are not mutually exclusive and may even be complimentary. Bush could satisfy all three with an aggressive foriegn policy, a tax cut, and letting the social cons set social policy. That's what led to Republican gains in 2002 and 2004.
However, a series of major events have happened since 2004 to discredit each of these three legs of the party.
Each of these events that occurred between 2004-08 discredited one or more major constituencies of the Republican Party.
1. Terry Schiavo - The Schaivo case showed America what would happen if the Social Cons actually got power. Your personal decisions would be irrelevant compared to their ideology. Furthermore, the case showed that even socially moderate Florida Republicans would roll over if the Religious Right asked them to.
2. Katrina - They wanted a government so small they could drown it in a bathtub. We got a government so small that a bunch of people drowned in New Orleans. Conservatives mock the breadlines in the former USSR and economically dysfunctional Cuba, and rightfully so. However, the Cubans know what to do when a hurricane strikes. Furthermore, the hawks were discredited when our great Commander-in-Chief was at Mr. Maverick's birthday party while a major American city was being destroyed.
3. Iraq - They said we would be greeted as liberators. While there was initial goodwill when Saddam was gone, failure to provide basic physical and economic security let the terrorists gain a foothold in Iraq. Alienating the international community meant that we had to foot the bill for this ourselves. We won the battle rather quickly, but were losing the war due to incompetence at the top. Fortunately, things have improved due to an increase in troops ("the surge") and a change in tactics. But it never should have gotten to this point.
4. Republican Scandals - The party of "Moral Values" brought us David Vitter, Larry Craig, Mark Foley, Jack Abramoff, Duke Cunningham, "Hot Tub Tom" DeLay, Don Young and Ted Stevens. 'Nuff said.
5. The failure of Immigration Reform - Immigration Reform showed America, and especially Latinos, the dark side of the Republican Party, which is that a lot of Republicans simply don't like non-white people. George W. Bush and John McCain had always done well among Latinos--and for good reason. Rarely will Bush and McCain be praised on dKos, but they were mostly good guys on immigration. However, the electoral consequences were brutal in 2008. Newly built bridges have been burned to the ground. Latinos voted Democratic in large numbers, even more conservative Latino populations, like in the Southwest and in Florida went Democratic. What happened to the California Republicans with Prop 187 has now happened nationwide.
6. Epic Fail on Wall Street - Republicans like to brag about how great our free market economy is. Well, we got to see what happens when you do leave the markets alone. The economy wasn't really strong, it was on steroids. And now here comes the heart failure cause by years of steriod abuse. Worse yet, thanks to Republican neglect of our infrastructure and social safety net, millions of Americans have nothing to fall back on. Of course, we couldn't have any of that, because that would be "socialism", but when the banks fail, guess who is first in line for a handout?
So, in the past four years, the Religious Right, the Hawks, and Wall Street have all be soundly discredited. Is it any wonder the Republicans could do nothing but attack? They had nothing to run on but failure.
Furthermore, in the past four years, the Democrats have gotten a lot better organized. This is what the 50 state strategy is all about. Democrats won a Congressional district in Idaho on Tuesday. The one electoral vote from the Congressional district around greater Omaha, NE is still too close to call. In 2004, the Democrats were becoming a marginalized, regional party. Now the Republicans are in danger of this same fate.
