And yellow dogs too! Mutts, absolutely.
President-elect Obama, you couldn't do better than to get yourself a shelter dog. That's all I have (2) and I wouldn't trade them for the world.
Might I make a few further suggestions?
- While an adoption from a no-kill shelter is a fine thing, please consider rescuing a dog from the death row that is a shelter that can only house a homeless pet for 10 days to two weeks before they are euthanized. It is good for the dog yes, but think about what a teachable moment it would be for Malia and Sasha. They would learn that a simple act of compassion can save a life and be a benefit to their own at the same time.
- When you do it, make it public. The publicity you will generate could raise awareness of the issue to unprecedented heights. My town, Austin, is about as dog friendly a place as you're ever gonna see. But our city-run shelter, the Town Lake Animal Center, is still not no-kill, despite 10 years of local effort. Your adoption might spur the will to raise the funds and make the changes necessary to make this happen not only here, but across the country.
- I know the girls want a puppy, but would you consider adopting a grown dog? They have a harder time finding a home. And, they generally are far less destructive than puppies and adolescents. Sure you miss the puppy-cute, but my boy and girl are still infinitely entertaining to me and my family and friends.
Whatever you do, thanks for making this as big an issue as you have. You inspire people and this is a big deal.
Here's a little eye candy. My good shelter dogs:
