A moment in time to make a country whole.

— I’m about to head to Grant Park to talk to everyone gathered there, but I wanted to write to you first.
We just made history.
And I don’t want you to forget how we did it.
You made history every single day during this campaign — every day you knocked on doors, made a donation, or talked to your family, friends, and neighbors about why you believe it’s time for change.
I want to thank all of you who gave your time, talent, and passion to this campaign.
We have a lot of work to do to get our country back on track, and I’ll be in touch soon about what comes next.
But I want to be very clear about one thing...
All of this happened because of you.
Thank you,
Barack

CHICAGO — November 5th
— A GREAT MOMENT FOR OUR AMERICA —
The pictures at Grant Park election night really said it all didn’t they? Even the most battle-scarred among us were moved to tears at the sight of this profoundly unique man becoming our president. And not to pick nits, but if people are going to categorize the man by race, then let’s be accurate. Mr. Barack Hussein Obama is the first African-Caucasian American president. He’s a man with a mix of bloodlines from black people and white people, and I think this delicious mix of races is part of his appeal as sure as the mix gave him the genes to produce a gifted young man with a beautiful family.
It’s been a long, hard trip, these last 8 years, and I can’t begin to try to be eloquent at this hour. So I’ll say simply this: against incredible odds, President Obama fashioned an organization that aimed for victory and success, and with that he achieved a start we can participate in. After 8 years out in the cold, that’s a big deal.
Even in my exhaustion, I believe with all my heart and soul that progressives must, for the first time in 78 years or so, really come together and organize both to express support for Mr. Obama and demonstrate to him in a serious and disciplined way that we will pressure him to always act to serve peoples’ needs first, and we’ll be there to support him to withstand the powers that be who act against the interests of the people of the United States and the people of the world.
We call on all people of good will to work together to bring to Washington on January 20th such a crowd of people that it cannot be ignored, all to express demands that our president act to meet peoples’ needs, and know when he acts to serve our people, we will be there for him. To impress President Obama and our country with the strength of our resolve, there should be 2 million people in Washington on Inauguration Day.
For starters, here are a few things I’d like to see him express in this time before his inauguration January 20th:
— On my first day in office, I will issue an executive order voiding all orders and directives of George W. Bush, in order to restore our Constitution and all the protections it provides our people.
— Because a foreign policy that presumes for our country a state of perpetual wars does not work and is morally unacceptable, I will establish a new cabinet position for a Secretary of Peace overseeing a Department of Peace, and I will ask Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich to consider my appointment of him to this position. The Peace Department will have the same standing as the State Department and the Department of Defense.
— I will ask the assistance and participation of the United Nations in assembling a multinational police force composed of people from countries in western Asia to take over the functions of maintaining order in Iraq as I order the withdrawal of all United States military personnel from that country. The United States will provide technical assistance in the re-building of the country’s infrastructure, and medical assistance for civilian Iraqis harmed during the occupation, as requested by the government of Iraq. I will further ask the United Nations to assist in the creation of a force to do the same in Afghanistan. The United States will be a cooperative component in funding and supplying material support for these efforts, but will not provide members of our armed forces unless they are requested by the United Nations.
— I will freeze all federal contracts with private mercenary, military and police agencies for review and cancellation of any contracts that duplicate services that are properly performed by any arm of the United States military.
— I will order the Veterans Administration to attend to the needs of any veteran requesting assistance in a timely fashion, and will order the VA to offer emergency assistance to any veteran who is homeless.
— I will order the review of all regulations issued during the 8 years of the Bush administration, and I will enlist the active participation in this process of Cynthia McKinney, Rosa Clemente, Robert Bowman, Ralph Nader, Al Gore, Ron Paul and other public safety and environmental experts.
— With respect to adherence to our Constitution and the truth that no one is above the law, I will direct the Attorney-General of the United States to appoint a Special Prosecutor to investigate all violations of law during the administration of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. I will further charge Congress to create a Voters’ Bill of Rights to protect democracy.
— In light of the economic crash that devastated the lives of so many Americans, I will order and put forward to the Congress a plan to fund and oversee the creation of new industries to provide jobs for people who have lost their incomes, and I will work to create a 21st century version of a Civilian Conservation Corps which will dedicate itself to restoring our country’s infrastructure, repair all our bridges and roadways, build new homes for people of low income, and repair the damage done to our country’s federal, state, and county lands.
— Since the stock market and private banks are not competent to meet the needs of our people, I will undertake a review of the Federal Reserve Bank, in order to take what measures are necessary to end the cycle of perpetual debt as the primary creator of money in our country. The ownership of the Federal Reserve must be explained, understood and changed if it is not able to serve the needs of our people.
Helluva wish list, eh? This is only a start, and given the many crises facing our people and our whole world, we need to get started right away. So think on it, put your lists together, let’s talk among ourselves — but not too much — and let’s all keep our eyes on the prize: a new time for the United States, for Canada and Mexico, a new time for our world, when we can finally toss off all the old parochial, provincial fears and hates that history’s proved never work, and let’s cooperate to make our world what it should and can be.
— Yes we can.
