I must express my sense of utter frustration over the length and extent of some diaries here on Kos.
To distinguish between "length" and "extent", just let me say that length refers to the amount of reading material without associated videos or links. Extent refers to an extention of the diary by including videos and/or links as references.
On the one hand, diaries can't be too short. The rules say "Diaries should be substantive. A good guideline is that if you don't have at least three solid paragraphs to write about your subject, you should probably post a comment in an open thread, or in a recent diary or front-page post that covers a topic relevant to what you wish to write about."
I've seen many diaries that were considered "too short" and the diarist got "blasted out of the water" for presenting one too short.
On the other hand, I've seen many "long-winded" diaries so long, complex and convoluted, with associated videos and links, that for any normal human to read, see and absorb the material, as important as it might be, would take a day or two. By that time, the diary is way "off the radar screen" and is irrelevant. By the time one figures out whether they are worth reading, one might have wasted far more time than one should have.
Having said all this, my personal preference is biased toward the short diaries. Diarists who are concise, to the point, and who don't fool around about getting their point across seem to appreciate the valuable time of their readers. They are more likely to have posted diaries that will actually be read and appreciated; hence more productive.
Perhaps this gets down to a cost-benefit ratio for the reader of diaries?
Also, a cost-benefit ratio for the diarist?
Anyway, at the risk of making my diary way too long, I'll stop now, except to say that I hope that this diary length is at least "reasonably digestible in a reasonable amount of your time".
