OK, so you probably know what ... exacerbate means.
Dhole, probably, because you're a wordy lot.
Verisimilitude is not a problem.
OK, then. Rosacea.
Easy enough.
Plodge.
Now, if you grew up with my mother, or you think of similarly sounding words (neighboring phonemes can intermix so very easily), you might guess that it means something like walking slowly but difficultly through snow.
Now try cozen.
No cheating -- oh, the irony; I didn't orchestrate that.
If you like feeling smart -- and learning more words so you feel even smarter --- you've got to check out freerice.com.
This diary is an extended part of a series of "What else can I do?" featurettes in KINship diaries. The economy's tough, and giving's down. This is one way you can help the world's poor by just using your spare time and brain.
So I don't know about you, but in a given workday, I have between an hour and a lot more than an hour of downtime. And because I'm salaried, there's no clocking out. Now, I could go out and about exploring, but I frankly don't want to, and plus, I get paid to be at my desk working or being ready for work.
I used to go to places like addictinggames.com (and armorgames.com, and heavygames.com, and dedegames.com, and several others) almost ritualistically. I've played and beaten (or advanced pretty far in games that don't end) a bunch of games.
But ... at the end of the day, that had surely gotten me better at beating the games, but it hadn't done much more than entertain me.
A mere nine months later, I remembered a site someone had linked on livejournal (which I used to frequent until I found this place and, separately, just stopped caring) where you basically enrich people's lives by knowing lots of words.
Well, as a collector of words (some of which -- "enhanced," "interrogation" and "techniques" -- have been quite displeased with their stay in captivity), this is kind of up my alley.
And if I've got this site's denizens pegged right, the chance to expand your lexicon and feed hungry people ... the former is fun, and the latter is lovely.
(Oh, and the point is to guess; looking up the words you don't know will propel you to higher levels, but it'll also waste time you could be using donating 10-grain units of rice.)
Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go guess what a quenelle is.
