For the last month or so, I have wrote, read and responded to diaries about the auto bailout. As I always caveat, I am against all bailouts.
Yesterday, in response to one of my posts, a poster commented about how the Republicans were trying to take down the UAW. I thought, "that is true, but how does that relate to GM failing. GM's problem's began far before the bailout." GM has failed itself.
The mentality of the defense by the auto bailout supporters has really surprised me. I view it very much like someone who has been molested defending the molester because a religious fanatic is trying to twist the molestation and the molested doesn't like the religious fanatic.
GM's talking points--
A. We are no different than the foreign companies--Toyota is running a loss / everyone is down. (And how exactly is this related to why GM has 62 billion in debt and is losing money hand and fist every month? Companies are not expected to prepare )
B. This is all caused by the credit crunch. (Ummm, please don't start there, and then GM has been down all year because. . .and they haven't made a profit in years more because???? I think I have finally gotten the argument--Yes, we were on the brink of bankruptcy but we were holding our breath to avoid falling off the cliff and then the credit crunch hit and we fell off, but we would have permanently teatered on the edge of the cliff if it weren't for the credit crunch.)
C. The Republicans are trying to crush the UAW. (Yes!! But SO WHAT, when it comes to reasons why GM is in the situation it is in. This is the BIGGIE abused mentality one for me. Is this new? NO! So, everyone knows the Republicans are out to crush the UAW. If the company really likes the UAW, what will they do. They will do everything in their power to make sure they stay competitive and economically healthy so that they don't put the UAW in a position to potentially get thwarted by the Republicans. Did they do that? Hell no!)
There are more. What I don't get is why the UAW/ auto bailout supporters eat it up like chocolate pudding and repeat and spread and repeat? GM threw you under the bus and you all come back for more. IMO most of these excuses sound stupid. As a response to why GM should get a bailout, "because this credit crunch has brought down our business." Goodness gracious, here is a penny, spend it wisely. Considering the financials of GM, that is an insulting answer.
Don't you think GM thinks its great that the UAW is going around saying "the credit crunch" has caused GM to be in a bad economic state. Do you think GM doesn't know that it totally mismanaged the business? They know. They just want their puppets to go out and say otherwise. Once again, score one for the management.
