In early December I found out that the company I work for had been bought and my position is possibly going to be eliminated.
Last week I had the displeasure of letting my staff know that they are laid off- it wasn't that bad because they got ok severance's. I'm not in the initial wave of layoffs, so im not even going to get a package-- that sucks. They'll probably just keep me around for a few weeks/couple of months, than fire me without a severance: classy bunch.
I'm feeling pretty lucky, pretty blessed. I mean whats the first thing anyone would do when they find out they're losing their job?
Get married of course.
Yup, we decided to get married on New Years eve. We're heading to Vegas on Monday, going to party our asses off and get hitched.
I'm feeling real good about this. I mean really, marrying someone about to be unemployed? She's either real dumb, or has a whole lot of faith in me/us.
When we get back we'll deal with the economic reality. We decided that we should open a business, so in January we're going to do it. It'll be slow times, but whatever, we both grew up dirt poor so we can tough it out. For us to be happy we need to not live under someone's thumb.
So here's our quick checklist of what to do when you face unemployment:
- get engaged
- spend your savings on a ring and a trip to vegas, party, drink, have a blast.
- return start your own business and cross your fingers
- if #3 doesnt work out: deal with it somehow- maybe apply for TARP
Is this reckless? Who knows, maybe a little. So what.
2009 is looking pretty good so far.
