For those of you who may not have followed such matters, the ‘world’ is poised to add one second to the length of the year 2008. The last minute of 2008 (31-12-2008, 11:59) is to be one second longer, or 61 seconds before 2009 officially begins. For those who would like a more scientific, rational explanation of why this will happen, you can find it here or any of numerous other places.
But, it is not the explanation that bothers me... it effectively adds one more second to the malevolent reign of the GWB administration, one more second to a disastrous odessy, courtesy of BushCo. Of course, 2008 has only been the capstone to an unprecedented run of disastrous years, courtesy of Bushco.
Frankly, I do not want to endure even one more second of a GWB administration than is absolutely necessary. After all, the damage this crew can effect in the blink of an eye (and often has done), it may take years or even lifetimes to set right.
Now I know that the physicists, astrophysicists, NIST (National Institute of Science and Technology), and others in various scientific disciplines—the gatekeepers of such things as time—have good reason for adding that second on the date and time proposed. But I have a humble request. Would it be possible to delay its addition until around midnight on the day President-elect Obama takes the oath of office?
Like I said, even one added second of GWB is too much! And GWB and crew are leaving such a monumental mess, Obama will need every single spare second possible, just to get things in hand, much less set them on the right path.
Personally, at the scientifically-agreed time of change, I will not be setting my watch or clocks back one second. Time is always a problem for me, anyway, what with time zone differences and all. That is not to even mention the difficulties when I cross the International Date Line and do not catch up with the right calendar date for weeks or even months! And now I am expected to keep up with one second?
Well, no matter what the judgement of the scientific community, I will withhold ‘my’ change of an additional second until Obama is sworn.
Happy New Year to you all. May it be the best year ever for you. I will see it, due to the vagaries of time zones and the International Date Line in a bit less than two hours. Shortly, it will bring something we all need. Everything may not turn out as we might wish on an individual level, perhaps, but we will have something that has been lacking in the national psyche – there will soon be what has been so sorely missed for at least the last eight years wandering in the desert – there will be hope!
Cheers and the best to you all.:)
