The response to President Obama’s call to serve is already taking off in a big way, according to Nicola Goren, of the country’s service organization, The Corporation for National and Community Service. They are working with the Presidential Inaugural Committee to organize the greatest day of service in the country’s history. President-elect Obama, Vice President-elect Biden, and their families will also serve on the January 19 holiday in the Washington D.C. area.
The National Service Corporation and The Presidential Inaugural Committee will launch a new website next week that will make it easy for Americans to find or organize volunteer projects. Buffy Wicks, who was the Missouri State Director for the Obama Campaign and a director for Wake-Up Wal-Mart, will spearhead the PIC initiative to mobilize the nation. The Corporation for National and Community Service works to include service in the Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday and will be working with the Presidential Inaugural Committee on the website and the service campaign this year.
"In this time of economic distress, Americans need to realize Dr. King’s dream of a better America. Service is a solution to some of our toughest challenges, and service is needed now more than ever," said Nicola Goren, Acting CEO of the Corporation. "We are pleased to be working with the Presidential Inaugural Committee on this historic call to service. As Americans make their New Year’s resolutions, we hope volunteering will be at the top of the list, starting on the King Holiday and lasting throughout the year."
Other outreach activities to promote service on the King Holiday and beyond include:
The National Association of Broadcasters is sponsoring a "radio roadblock" on Jan 15, when 4,000 stations will be encouraged to air public service ads featuring Dr. King’s voice.
Facebook is working with the Service Corporation to encourage users to visit the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Fan page and volunteer or organize their own projects.
Visit the King Day of Service website at www.MLKDAY.gov to find more tools for planning and promoting projects, including new "do it yourself" action guides. Also be sure to check back with Obama-Mamas.com to get more information on the Presidential Inaugural Committee Day of Service web site.
