This text message, sent to his colleagues by Norwegian doctor Mads Gilbert from Gaza, is causing a shock and disbelief in Europe and the rest of the world. 'I've never seen a bloodbath involving so many children and pregnant women in my entire life', adds Gilbert when describing the 11th day of bombing.
As Israel banished media from the occupied territories, cell phones have become 1 of the very few means of communication between Gaza and outside world. Gilbert, a veteran of military conflicts in Lebanon and Afganistan, claims he'd never seen such massacre ever before. 'We can't call ourselves Europeans if we don't manage to stop this. We've gotta do much more', he concludes.
The testimony of the 61 year old doctor reached and was aired by majority of world media outlets, and is being received with disgust over disproportion in Israeli retaliation to Hamas rocket attacks. Yes, Hamas launched around 700 of them, and nobody denies the Israelis' right to protect their own country, but 1 thing is clearly documented: there were no fatalities in the land of the 'chosen'. Another thing remains quite unclear and certainly underreported: why would Hamas even bother sending explosive greetings to the Jews? As a courtesy of a good neighbor? As a provocation? Or as a disapproval to the measures Israel took after Hamas became an official political representation of the Palestinians, which, in the words of Pat Buchanan, led to creating of Gaza concentration camp? With 700 reportedly killed in Gaza in the last 2 weeks, every rocket now has a name. Besides the tears n sorrow they brought upon landing, each of them also symbolizes a gravestone for every single soul whose life it ended. Sadly, we all know there'll be more. And using the same old excuse about Israel's right to exist, we'll keep turning our heads away. The same way we did when our elected officials, in the name of 'enduring freedom', decided to illegally invade a sovereign nation to seek justice after a horrific terrorist attack. The same way we did when the supposedly solid reasoning behind the invasion turned as soft as the brains of its originators, but the killing went on. The same we do when it's our country, or our ally, defending our values and often disregarding the values of others.
