no Republicans backed the plan.

So that’s it then. Would anyone look at this package and be happy with every single component of it? I doubt the Obama Administration would even claim that, but in an effort to compromise, I’m sure it accepted some less than palatable elements in order to achieve a greater good.
And yet, not a single House Republican could pry himself/herself away from his/her faction and vote for this stimulus proposal. Do they have any concept of what the country has gone through already economically, or what it is about to go through? Do they have any sense of the dread that pervades the public, even for those lucky enough to still have jobs?
To be honest, I think they do. But they would rather take the chance on the country totally tanking in order to score some political points. Imagine that.
Consider the following title to an AP article issued today:
Mass layoffs surge in 2008, continue at rapid pace

This stimulus package is not a panacea. I hope it does more, but the best it might do is stem the tide. Yet, these House Republicans don’t even want to do that.
The Republican Party elites have now confirmed what most of us have long believed or at least suspected. They don’t give two shits about the American people. They’ll talk about individual freedom of enterprise, etc., but apparently have no problem reducing the scope of that enterprise to bartering services for scraps of food. They don’t have a clue of the hardships being suffered and, even if they do, they don’t care.
Their vision of the world is not based on reality, but on an ideology that has no relationship with the real world. Gone are the days where the real economy can cover up for the fundamental flaws of the "trickle down economics" philosophy. The needs of middle and lower class families can no longer be ignored.
Sure the stimulus package is expensive, but that’s only a reflection of the hole we have to get out of, or more precisely, to ensure the hole doesn’t get impossibly deep.
The depth of House Republicans’ depravity is stunning.
Thank God the Democrats control the House. To borrow a phrase from Rev. Lowery: "Say Amen."
