This will be very brief, as it warrants immediate attention to anyone living in California, and I could not find a related diary to forward this link to.
The California Dept. of Motor Vehicles is apparently trying to sneak through a program , to the tune of $63 million, to introduce biometric scans (thumbprint and facial). These would be embedded in all driver's licenses issued in the state , beginning as early as June, 2009.

Considering the economic crisis in the state , with cuts threatened all accross the board, why would the DMV be on a stealth campaign to push this through, circumventing the normal review procedures, including public hearings ? My guess is that they knew it wouldn't have a chance of getting through the state legislature , especially now.
Besides the creepy Big Brother aspect, identity theft is a real and growing problem in our country. Can you imagine the chaos that would result , and the potential for abuse , if someone else had access to your fingerprints ?
Please sign a letter demanding that this proposal go through the normal channels of state legislative procedure Thanks .here
