I do urge everyone to write and call your Senators and Congressmen to support the stimulus package. This is so important, nearly as important as getting President Obama elected in the first place. This is my letter to one of my Senators, George Voinovich (R-OH).
I urge you to support President Obama and his Recovery and Re-Investment Act. This is a crucial and unique moment, when monetary policy has been exhausted, private enterprise crippled, and public confidence shattered, a moment when the only recourse is governmental intervention and when an aggressive & bold fiscal policy is the only sane option. Revisionist historians would have you believe that FDR's New Deal and public works programs had little to do with this nation pulling itself from The Great Depression, but ask those who lived through it about FDR, and his New Deal. Ask them about the roads and parks and buildings they built that not only sustained this nation through our greatest of economic perils but laid the infrastructure necessary to enable our greatest generation to be the most prosperous of any in history. It was the largest and most pervasive government spending and works program of all time, World War II, that finally rescued America from the Great Depression for good. These are the times that government exists for, when private enterprise is unable or unwilling to do the heavy lifting. We must act swiftly, and we must act boldly. We have the opportunity to not only rescue this nation from another deep and prolonged depression, but to build the foundation for a new generation of Americans, one free from the tyranny of oil, and energized by innovation and 21st Century American ingenuity. Our ideology may differ wildly, but our love for this country and its people do not. I am not a supporter, but I am a constituant, and now is the time for action, for a new New Deal for America. Do the right thing, and vote with your President.
