This little notation is something that came to me several times while hearing the DC editor of the Nation, Christopher Hayes speak about why he:
-Wants to get rid of the filibuster
-Oppose Bipartisanship
-Attack Obama for being Pragmatic
Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.
Now I understand the problems that Republicans have caused. I oppose them as stringently as anyone else. They act like prissy children out of power and either incompetent or malcontents when in power BUT they are still a part of government. And unfortunately a part of the government we must work with.
-Hayes said that when the Republicans wanted to use the nuclear option to get rid of the filibuster he supported it, he called the Filibuster a "reactionary tool". At the time it would have given George W. Bush the capacity to have filled his judicial appointments with ease, and probably other types of legislation with out Democratic opposition. Think about how much worse out country would be if the Nuclear option had succeeded.
Now that Democrats have come into power there are radicals who say we should get rid of the filibuster so that we can pass our legislation. Fun as it may be, the future is unknowable and we run the risk of Republicans returning to power and passing legislation as they see fit.
In response to a questioner's comments that Obama is seeking Bipartisanship as if it were a "fetish". Hayes stated that it is not neccesary for us to work with them because we have all the good ideas. (no idea why there is a strikethrough)
Hayes wrote and article for the Nation on December 10th where he called 'Obama the Pragmatist' a danger and that he should only listen to Progressive ideas. Like as I would, it is not based on any realistic notions.
-Hayes continued his attack on Obama by saying that if we attack his left flank, he will know who his enemies are. It is strange to see what many view as a new start of an era a progressive pushing his philosophy at a time when we are undergoing a true crisis.
Hayes keeps speaking of pushing aside the Treasury and the Defense Department as the main buidings of importance of Washington. Since they are right next to the White House, they have too much power? Frankly, disagree all one likes but the main foundation of governments is a military and a treasury.
I attempted to contact Mr.Hayes about what he had said earlier tonight and got a sarcastic retort in response.
Liberal as I may be, I am as realistic as my username is. Obama only won 53% of the vote. When a 51% majority rules over a 49% minority it is not a liberal democracy, and the idea that it should be done is in fact Regressive
