So today's outrage du jour is the "Special Olympics" joke made by President Obama. Yeah, it was an insensitive comment, no doubt, but lets be honest, we have all made similar insensitive jokes at one time or another. I for one don't feel he meant any harm, and he has done a fine job of making amends. Enough on that.
Earlier today I was talking to a coworker of mine who is a dyed in the wool, Hannity loving, Limbaugh listening, Republican. He made a comment regarding this incident saying, "So Obama doesn't do so well without a teleprompter... I didn't see it, but I heard he made fun of disabled children." At that point I about lost it... I won't go into the details, but I tried to explain the situation, but this life long conservative had finally found political correctness, and I was having none of it.
This little anecdote is not really the point of this diary, the point is that President Obama reminded me of something.

It reminded me of the importance of helping those that need our support. Several years back I spent a day volunteering at a Special Olympics event. It was the most rewarding experience of my life. To this day, I can think of no other time when I felt so fulfilled.
With that in mind, I ventured over to the Special Olympics website. From there, I found my state chapter, then the events happening locally.
It inspired me to volunteer for the next event in my area (happening next weekend). Then something amazing happened, I was talking to one of my regular golfing buddies and managed to talk him into coming with me.
So now here I am... ventured back here to visit my other friends on "The Great Orange Satan" and urge you to do the same. The President and First Lady have both asked us to volunteer to help our country, and at the moment I can think of no better way to do that than to take this situation and demonstrate what a force of good liberals can do when motivated. Lets make Lemonade.
Visit the site, click a couple of links... find an event near you and volunteer. There is one thing I am absolutely sure of... you will be FOREVER glad you did.
Thank you in advanced... I know you will do the right thing.
