BREAKING NEWS: Obama administration telling CIA officials they will not be prosecuted for past waterboarding, AP reports
Obama has apparently guaranteed CIA officials they will not be prosecuted for past waterboarding.
First reaction: disappointment. Second thoughts: How is "CIA official" defined? May we still go after Bush, Cheney, Yoo, Rumsfeld, etc.? Is this just going to be one of those "Mistakes were made" processes to make the country feel better about itself while the world rolls its eyes? If yes, the decision is better than nothing but still disappointing.
Other questions: What if the official should have known the "legal opinion" was wrong? What if the official had an influence on the opinion?
What about other torture methods?
What about knowingly leaving American citizens to languish in prison without evidence?
What about knowingly leaving innocent people in prison because we were embarrassed we seized innocent people and did not want the truth to see light?
What about the Geneva Conventions?
What about the American soldiers who will die unnecessarily in the future because instead of surrendering like thousands of Iraqi soldiers did in 2003 (believing the United States would treat them well) the enemy soldiers will now fight to the death so they will not be tortured?
