This is the first time that has ever happened. Since I run a service business, I need strong backs
and sometimes weak minds. Not that I want weak minds, that is just what I get. It is just
hard physical work, healthy and outdoor type of work.
The math works something like this: for every 10 I hire, one will work out. Some only last
a day. The shortest time was 4 hours, and the guy walked off the job. I have been at it
30 years, and have done every bit of the work I ask of my crew. So sometimes it
just needs to be the right time, and fit for folks.
So we hired a new employee, young, country corn bread type. Good Alabama
country boy stock. Sweet, strong, but not the sharpest pencil in the pouch.
This guy kind of reminds me of Forrest Gump a little bit, even kind of looks like him.
But he went to Junior College for a while, graduated High School. So it isn't
rocket science here, schlepping shit all over town.
His driving record came back from the insurance company with a smiley face. Ah, he
is good to go. Telling information, on his application salary desired, $6.55 per hour.
My bookkeeper showed me that, he was like " Well, we were gonna give you $8.50
an hour, but if you insist." He was just kidding. But, I really can't remember seeing
someone asking for so little.
And when he got the call, come on in, your hired, he was so happy. The next
morning after filling out all his paperwork (I-9, W-4 yada, yada) he came to me.
Stuck out his hand, shaking mine vigorously and said :" Thank you very much for this job,
I will try really hard."
Wow! in 30 years I have never had anyone thank me for hiring them, Ever!
Sure, after a few years with me, maybe a thank you here and there, after
a xmas bonus or something.
But it has only been 3 days, will he last? Time will only tell, but he
doesn't talk much, and was a body builder, likes to work with
his body, and our work is super physical, so good.
And, yeah things seem to be picking up a bit around here in
Central Alabama, hope things are getting better in your neck
of the woods too. That's life for today.
