Nothing offends me more than abject stupidity. And it seems the same with many of you as well - which is why the many Michele Bachmann, Hannity, O'Reilly, Malkin, and other mental stunners just seem to generate a collective head slap here on the site.
This one is personal. We've been looking for a new place based on very specific school district boundries. We made an offer last week, are under contract, and have a home inspection tomorrow. The school, Walt Whitman High in Maryland.
The anti-gay nutjobs of the Westboro Baptist Church came to Whitman high today to protest...well the very name of the high school. (Whitman was considered gay). Follow me past to jump to watch a bunch of high schoolers pwn the nutjobs.
Click here to be taken to a Washington Post article with video of the high schoolers versus the right-wing nutjobs. See the high school students of Whitman high outclass the nutjobs.
In all, the high school and its administration did a great job of dealing with the protesters, making the entire episode an opportunity to teach:
Faculty had spun the event into an interdisciplinary lesson. English teachers spent the day teaching Whitman's verse. Social studies teachers led a unit on tolerance. Math teachers fanned through the crowd, attempting a head count.
Ultimately, assuming our home inspection turns out with no surprises, we're really thrilled to be moving into the Whitman school district. When my daughter reaches high school age, I hope she's a student leader, fighting against this type of stupidity.
All hail the faculty and students of Walt Whitman High School.
