I think I understand why Arlen Spector and Nelson are against the public option on healthcare.
Healthcare business.
Nelson said it when he said that the option would be better than the private sector. And I believe that would hurt the insurance industry.
Now I am no fan of the insurance industry at all. I would prefer if Healthcare was handled by the government with investment in new technologies to keep research cutting edge as well as not for profit hospitals (my wish list). Preventative medicine. more community healthcare professionals, education etc...(I have a long wish list)
But I understand that some people believe that business should not be locked out. But the insurance industry has failed the American people in cost as well as treatment based on profit. And Senators who oppose President Obama's Public Healthcare reform in favor of keeping private health care businesses as the most desirable do not seem to be willing to make the industry change their ways and this is the part that is unacceptable.
Why should business not be held accountable for the failures? Obviously, after all of these years, the industry is not benefitting the American people...so what good are they and why should we keep them? If we can do something else that strives to be better and accessible to everyone, why should we not do it?
America is the people, not the businesses, and I think it is telling that Nelson and Spector would prefer to support business over the people's welfare. It is not like the industry is all that successful in making healtcare affordable and available. They do not serve the American people very well at all.
It just seems like common sense to throw what does not work to the curb. Lord knows the industry has thrown the American people to the curb often enough.
If they want the private sector to be the best option, then they need to bring to the table in what ways will the private sector benefit us. What changes will they introduce to make the industry a desirable option for us? Otherwise, talk to the hand.
Business should serve us, not the other way around.
