A daily blog in support of liberal ideas and the President.
Well it’s Monday and a lot took place last week while I was away in my bed sleeping off a fever and trying to rejoin the human race. No, I didn’t have Swine Flu, but I think I might have felt better if I had. So let’s start with Justice David Souter stepping down from the Supreme Court. I want to first thank him from the bottom of my left-leaning heart for staying on the Court over the last eight years so as to keep Bush from putting another right-wing hack on the bench. I am no great prognosticator but, I think we can all guarantee that no matter who President Obama chooses for the bench the Republicans will oppose them for being to liberal, or pro-abortion, or a communist or anything, it isn’t as if they care about being honest when they are slinging their hate and vile slurs at their opponents. We will see the "Pro-Life" people out protesting whomever President Obama chooses, but I say it is time to take away the term Pro-life from the right. The Republican Party and other right-wingers are in no way Pro-Life, they are Anti-Abortion. Unless you are willing to support America’s children through education, healthcare, housing and other aid then you cannot call yourself a supporter of life. This attitude of the Republicans shows time and time again, for instance take what Arlene Specter said this weekend about being unhappy with the Republican Party for years about there unwillingness to spend money on cancer research, going as far as to say Jack Kemp might still be alive today if Republicans would have been willing to invest in medical research.
I don’t know honestly what Republicans have against things like cancer research, I am sure cancer has touched the lives of many of their families, but it goes to the same question why do Republicans hate taxes so much? I was discussing taxes with a younger friend of mine this weekend who pointed out that paying taxes should be viewed as patriotic. He is right, it is all of our duty as citizens to pay are fair share and we should want too. Our taxes pay for the roads, the military, healthcare for the elderly, aid to low income people, infrastructure, bridges, and so on and so on. How can you support your country but not be willing to fund it? And I don’t want to hear the Republican bullshit like we pay too much, or I don’t want my money spent on paying for some lazy so and so (usually some racial slur) on welfare. First I would say, hey you can judge a society on how it treats its poorest and least fortunate. Second, I don’t like my taxes going to buy more jets and bombs and ships we don’t need, but I realize that I don’t get to choose were all of my tax dollars are spent, that is why we hold elections. Finally though how can an investment in America be negative? A true Patriot wants America to get back on her feet and turn this economy around, not bitch about everything the opposition does just because they are the opposition.
President Obama gave a short speech this morning about closing the corporate tax loopholes, and an end to illegal overseas tax evasion. I know the Republicans are against this as well, god forbid these huge multi-national companies are forced to pay their fair share, that would be awful right? I am pleased to hear they are going to go after these companies; it is about time something is down about these tax cheats. The IRS doesn’t give breaks to average Americans who don’t pay their taxes so it’s time the big corporations are treated the same as the rest of us.
Finally I come to the segment were I highlight a philosopher I love, but this week we are going to do the opposite and do the ANTI-PHILOSOPHER OF THE WEEK, and I have chosen the man most responsible for where America is today Ronald Reagan who stupidly said, "A tree's a tree. How many more do you need to look at?" Real conservative of you Ronny, it’s not like deforestation isn’t helping destroy our environment or anything. The old windbag also said, "Government’s first duty is to protect the people, not run their lives." I would agree with you, but what Ronny meant was, not run your life if you think like he did, just ask gay people or a women seeking to have an abortion. Well as I said I am sorry I was away sick most of last week, and until tomorrow goodbye...
