Just when you thought there was no one on Earth as evil as Dick Cheney, today he came out in favor of Gay Marriage. Of course his daughter is gay and has obviously had a big influence on his thinking, but it's still bizarre that The Big Knuckledragger himself has come out for the cause.
Speaking at the National Press Club, Cheney had this to say:
"I think that freedom means freedom for everyone. As many of you know, one of my daughters is gay and it is something we have lived with for a long time in our family. I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish. Any kind of arrangement they wish. The question of whether or not there ought to be a federal statute to protect this, I don't support. I do believe that historically the way marriage has been regulated is at the state level. It has always been a state issue and I think that is the way it ought to be handled, on a state-by-state basis... But I don't have any problem with that. People ought to get a shot at that."
He had to go all states' rights on us, of course, but still he's down with it. He's made less emphatic statements before, but this comes at a time when the debate is raging in the Republican Party.
So as much as I'm an Obama man all the way, this really ups the ante for Barack to reconsider his position, i.e. civil unions, but no SSM. It's understandable he didn't want to give the Repugs a club to hit him with during the election, particularly on a states' issue, but now it's time for him to lead on this and I don't believe there's any doubt where he stands.
