First let me make quite clear that christianity is an ideology, just as socialism or capitalism or islam or buddhism is.
It is not inherent - it is chosen. And it has many adherents who believe in it - all to varying degrees - and who also pick and choose the parts they believe in. Good people subscribe to parts of it, evil people subscribe to parts of it.
Personally, I think on the whole it is an evil ideology which causes great suffering both to its followers and to it's victims.
But I'm not here to argue theology.
I am here to make that point that criticism of an ideology does not correspond to racism or bigotry or hatred of an individual.
There are "good" christians, and there are "evil" christians.
Pastor Dan is a "good" christian, and we all know that - and there are many others.
There also have been good socialists, communists, capitalists, muslims, and even (godwin warning) a good nazi or two.
That fact does not mean that one must respect the ideology.
I don't hate all christians, just because I hate the ideology.
More to the point - many religions insist that they be "respected" and not criticized, and anyone who does criticize the religion is bigoted against "christians" as opposed to christianity.
That is a false claim meant to shield the religion from legitimate criticism. It used to be - and still is in some countries - the crime of blasphemy.
I think Pastor Dan is one of the "good" guys, and I support him and his work - that does NOT translate into a support of christianity.
And if he wants to argue about who is a "true christian" that is an internal debate constantly held between its hundreds of sects constantly, and they have been killing each other over who was a "true christian" for centuries.
But it also is a claim that christianity, itself, (at least Pastor Dan's version of it) is worthy of respect.
No sale.
We can hate the ideology while realizing that not all holders of that ideology are bad people.
And the followers of that ideology need to realize that criticism of their ideology is not bigotry against them personally.
