Nothing like a little racism/bigotry/xenophobia to get the GOPosaurs going is there?
According to NYT Editorial:
the American Cause, released a report arguing that anti-immigration absolutism was still the solution for the party’s deep electoral woes
snip
urged Republicans to double down on their efforts to run on schemes to seal the border and drive immigrants out.
Never mind that immigrants come in many flavors (and I only pick on "Mexicans" as I am part of the group that gets derogatorily lumped in with them (not that there's anything wrong with being Mexican!), these guys are fantastic in making the case for why a few of us are OK, but we must be kept in check:
So far, so foul. But even more telling was the presence of Peter Brimelow, a former Forbes editor and founder of Vdare.com, an extremist anti-immigration Web site. It is named for Virginia Dare, the first white baby born in the English colonies, which tells you most of what you need to know. The site is worth a visit. There you can read Mr. Brimelow’s and Mr. Buchanan’s musings about racial dilution and the perils facing white people, and gems like this from Mr. Epstein:
"Diversity can be good in moderation — if what is being brought in is desirable. Most Americans don’t mind a little ethnic food, some Asian math whizzes, or a few Mariachi dancers — as long as these trends do not overwhelm the dominant culture."
While I usually laugh off stuff like this, I am a little more worried these days. With the increased wingnut attacks on _______ (pick your choice: immigrants, gays, women, abortion, etc.) it is getting scary and yesterday we saw the fruit of their labors in Dr. Tiller's murder.
Meanwhile, here in Boston (where I live) we are about to be treated to the return of Jay Severin. Here are a couple of Severin's gems in case anyone has not heard of him:
- Talking about Muslims in 2004:
"I have an alternative viewpoint. It's slightly different than yours. You think we should befriend them; I think we should kill them."
- Talking about Mexicans in 2009 (this actually got him suspended for a few weeks):
"We are talking about illegal immigration. So now, in addition to venereal disease and the other leading exports of Mexico -- women with mustaches and VD -- now we have swine flu... When we are the magnet for primitives around the world -- and it's not the primitives' fault, by the way, I'm not blaming them for being primitives, I'm merely observing they are primitives -- and when you scoop up some of the world's lowest of primitives in poor Mexico and drop it down in the middle of the United States -- poor, without skills, without language, not share our culture, not share our hygiene, haven't been vaccinated... Millions of leeches from a primitive country come here to leech off you.... Now, at this particular moment in history, they are exporting to us a rather more active form of disease, which is the swine flu."
While I write this diary a little just to mock the wingnuts, I can't help but to think of so many that have been affected by hate speech over the years - of course with Dr. Tiller freshest in our minds.
I hate to be a worry-wart and think of things like pre-Nazi Germany where the economic and political conditions led to Hitler's regime. I still think we are far from that, but today I worry a little more (especially for my kids).
