Now I'm really steamed. The parcel tax to provide supplemental funds for our local schools "failed." 62 percent of those voting cast a ballot in favor of the measure. But 67% have to approve it in order for it to pass.
I campaigned in favor of this measure, and I'm so frustrated that the minority of voters in this town can prevent the majority from supporting children and schools through a local tax.
There are conversations about fundraising going on. Perhaps $1.6 million may be raised in time to hire back some K-3 teachers who will be laid off. I'm dubious, and I'm very concerned about the precedent that could be set. The idea that only parents of kids who are currently in the public schools should pay to support education in public schools galls me. That's not a Progressive point of view.
So, now I'm motivated to get involved in reform at the state level instead of working on band-aids for my own town. Where should I start? with a political party, or gathering signatures for a proposition to eliminate the 2/3 rule?
