Back in April, Newt Gingrich gave an interview to Christianity Today, a publication that bills itself as "A Magazine Of Evangelical Conviction". The magazine covers issues of faith and public policy, and is generally no friend of Obama. I don't know much about this publication, so any correction of my perception of it is welcome.
In the interview, he gave his opinion/standard talking points on gay marriage, taxes, spending, and the potential 2012 presidential field. My understanding of Newt's image is that he is popular among evangelicals and far right-wingers, but is exceedingly unpopular among everyone else. The comments attached to the interview paint a slightly different picture.
I trust Newt as much as I trusted McCain. Enough said.
I can't say I disagree with that.
This must be a fluke though, surely most evangelicals like the idea of Newt becoming president, don't they?
Newt would be an embarrassment to this country if he becomes President. He has so much sexual baggage in his past he won't succeed as President. The kettle can't talk about the tea pot. Newt, stay where you are and focus on your soul and stop criticizing the Democrats.
I have been praying for Newt to run for a long time. I may have just changed my mind. I also swore to myself I would never vote for McCain in 2000. I went back on that word when he selected Sarah Palin and gave him a chance which I regret. I do agree Sarah needs to build her credentials on national issues.... but she is the only one who is not ashamed to stand and really FIGHT for her conservative values. I pray Newt is not becoming a libral-light, PC constrained politician trying to play the "middle of the road" swing voter nonsense. We lose at that game every time.
For a long time I admired Newt, but, the picture of Newt with Pelosi on the sofa hawking global warming said everything one needs to know about Newt, just another typical RINO
Maybe not. If these guys think Newt is becoming a liberal, imagine what their version of a conservative would look like?
They also take a few shots at Newt over his recent "conversion" to Catholicism:
The leaders of virtue for the GOP are Newt, Rush, Rudy, O'Reilly, and David Vitter. How come people with multiple failed marraiges, oxycontin charges, sexual harrassment accusations, and prostitution charges get to decide who is a good Christian? Take care of the beam in your own eye before you move on to the speck in your neighbor's. Newt is a clown. Newt, ask the Pope about the death penalty and his view on the Iraq war - see if your views match up. Then apologize to your ex-wife who you served divorce papers to when she was in the hospital. When you are done, GO AWAY.
I wondered where Newt was in the last election. He could have pulled the Republican's together early if he had run for President. I think he stayed out and let McCain/Palin fight a losing battle. I also wonder about the "conversion to Catholicism"....even by his own statements in this article it sounds like he "adjusted" to Catholicism not converted. It appears that whether he is Catholic, evangelical, ...whatever ...essentially Newt is a politician. I agree with hrh40 in that Palin is a threat to an "inside the beltway, which way is the wind blowing"politician. I'm sad that he doesn't appear to be more than that because he is the smartest, most articulate man on the issues but recently he has come across as disingenuous to me.
Apparently, this site has been infiltrated by teh libruls:
Newt Gingrich is the poster-boy for lying, corupt, good-ol-boy politics. Why does everyone forget this? That is exactly what people are screaming against. Replubicans need to loose Newt and Karl Rove if they want to win. They are"so last century".
A thrice-married adulterer trying to take President Obama, a poster-child for family values, to task on issues related to faith? This is a joke, right?
I read with interest your recent interview with Newt Gingrich. I'm sorry that his focus still remains, like the air United States breathes, that of "most prosperous and successful and productive country in the world." It's not that I mind success, but I do mind that those actions and values associated with sharing and providing for those oppressed by poverty - without the small print of it's being good for corporate America in the long run - are still not the thoughts being espoused by your political leadership. That is wrong. As for associating 'Allah' with 'Jesus Christ', that's a mismatch as the word 'Allah' equals 'God' and is not understood to be, in any way or to any degree, human. Again, American political leadership is speaking without adequately understanding and issue from a perspective that is wider than the desired United States perspective. Such leadership has brought the United States, and in this round, the world, to more crises than we care to admit.
Those comments were rated the lowest, so I assume they are not representative of the majority of opinion. It's nice to see that there are at least a few progressive evangelicals out there though.
This is just a sampling, but most comments are similar to these, and there were several slamming Sarah Palin. This seems eerily familiar to what we saw coming from the right about their candidates in 2008, when most polling showed that Republicans were not happy with their choices for president. It's far too early to make any kind of predictions, but this could prove beneficial to the left in 2012.
I think this last comment sums up how most people feel about Newt on right or left:
Newt--you turning out to be just another politician who is willing to step on anyone that you think is above you. Allot of us voters are not stupid and we do keep up with current events
With friends like these, who needs Liberals?
