Welcome to the Pootie-Woozle Monday Diary (mostly woozles today). I am the official substitute host today for our beloved Triciawyse so that she and her husband Joey can celebrate their anniversary.
All animals are welcome here: funny, serious, short and stout, tall and thin, furry and fuzzy, feathered and downy, rodent, amphibian, insect, reptile, wild and domesticated. I promise that the woozle Yoda will not take his revenge on them.
Please no politics or other nasties. Thanks!
How much do you know about our woozle friends? Did you know that the dog name “Fido” is from Latin and means “fidelity.”
Do you have a new woozle in your home?
Or maybe more than one new woozle?
THINGS YOU NEED TO KNOW
Veterinarian
Your woozle’s vet is his own personal doctor, and dentist and surgeon. Among other things, the vet gives the dog preventative vaccinations. Just like with your own doctor, make sure you get to know and are comfortable with the vet early in the woozle's life. More information about vets and dog care can be found at this site:
http://www.canismajor.com/...
Do what the vet tells you to do about the woozle's teeth.
Of course, there can be a problem getting some woozles to the vet.
Baths and Grooming
Regular brushing and baths are as good for you as for the woozle, because they make the pootie more pleasant to live with and be close to.
Bath: This is a process by which the humans drench the floor, walls and themselves. You can help by shaking vigorously and frequently. From the Dog Dictionary
Exercise - Walking and Playing
A woozle, whether puppy or full grown dog, needs regular exercise like: walking, chasing balls or a Frisbee®, running, swiming or even dog contests. Contests can be either recreational or official. The contests generally require training, which will give you and your woozle special time together while you exercise. Link for more information about contests. There are photo contests of all sorts, but we are talking EXERCISE here.
Please remember to pick up any droppings when you are out public places and from your own yard. A small bag and paper towel will work where a Pooper Scooper is not an option. There are even Pooper Scooper Services available for your yard.
Dogs Helping Humans
> Specially trained dogs serve the blind and also provide services for handicapped people.
> Scientists have discovered that dogs can smell the presence of autism in children.
> Seizure Alert dogs can alert their owners up to an hour before the onset of an epileptic seizure.
> Because of their keen sense of smell, dogs are used in various jobs:
law enforcement and security groups use dogs to track down fleeing suspects, escaped prisoners and
to even uncover illegal drugs.
> Dogs provide protection for their humans and their livestock and other possessions.
GPS Googie (aka: woozle) Positioning System
> There are many other tasks that dogs do to help their humans.
Hazzards to Dogs, partial list
More details on hazzards to dogs can be found here.
> The ingredient Theobromine in chocolate can be lethal to dogs.
> Homemade Playdough substitute
> Antifreeze
> Grapes and raisins
> Onions and garlic

I suspect the position in the following photo is not good for dogs either:
Physical Characteristics
> A dog's whiskers, called vibrissae, are so sensitive they can actually sense very small airflow changes.
> Dogs sweat through the pads of their feet, not through their mouths.
> A dog's nose has over 200 scent receiving cells.
> Dogs can hear sounds that are too faint for us to hear, and also can hear noises at a much higher frequency than we can. Their hearing is so good that they probably rely more on sound than on sight to navigate their world.
No one appreciates the very special genius of your conversation as a dog does.
Christopher Morley
> Dogs' eyes have large pupils and a wide field of vision, making them really good at following moving objects.
> Dogs also see well in fairly low light.
> Dogs have far fewer taste buds than people -- probably fewer than 2,000. It is the smell that initially attracts them to a particular food.
Pootie (cat)/Woozle (dog) Comparisons -
With a couple of other creatures thrown in for good measure
> Cats have better memories than dogs. Tests conducted by the University of Michigan concluded that while
a dogs memory lasts no more than 5 minutes, a cat's can last as long as 16 hours - exceeding even that
of monkeys and orangutans.
> Cats have more than one hundred vocal sounds, while dogs only have about ten.
> Cats, not dogs, are the most common pets in America. There are approximately 66 million cats to
58 million dogs, with Parakeets a distant third at 14 million.
> 21% of dogs and 7% of cats snore.
The Mischief Factor
Dogs, especially puppies chew MANY things. Give the dog something (that your vet recommends) to chew on so he will leave most of your furniture, personal items, and other possessions alone. The following pictures, worth a thousand words each, will show some examples:
Miscellaneous tidbits
> The calories burned daily by the sled dogs running in Alaska's annual Iditarod race average 10,000. The 1,149-mile race commemorates the 1925 "Race for Life" when 20 volunteer mushers relayed medicine from Anchorage to Nome to battle a children's diphtheria epidemic.
> Dogs are mentioned 14 times in the Bible.
> The Canary Islands were not named for a bird called a canary. They were named after a breed of large dogs. The Latin name was Canariae insulae - "Island of Dogs."
> An estimated 1 million dogs in the United States have been named the primary beneficiary in their owner's will.

In order to really enjoy a dog, one doesn't merely try to train him to be semihuman. The point of it is to open oneself to the possibility of becoming partly a dog.

Personal Thoughts and Diary Links
I have been thinking about so many of our Pootie and Woozle loving friends over the weekend:
> Pooties and Woozles that have gone over the Rainbow Bridge or are seriously ill, as well as, the people who love and care for them.
> khloemi - My usual radio station was playing patriotic music much of the weekend, which reminded me of khloemi's patriotic music theme diary last Thursday. If you are still in the mood for patriotic things, here is the Link.
> iriti - I was reading in Micah the chapter where her sig line appears. It reminded me of her and the many beautiful diaries she has done. Recently, she has done some stunning photo diaries supporting the important causes DKos is highlighting right now. Here is a a recent one on Shenandoah National Park.
> triciawyse - as she and Joey celebrate their anniversary.
> others - that I will not list by name, who are ill or traveling.
Posted in memory of all the dear woozles that I have had the privilege to live with: Frosty, Dynamite, Ikey, Doats, Cindy and Buffy.
Please adopt a woozle
I'm wishing for the best to all of the people who pass this way today.
