Pickens backs off wind farm project: report
Reuters) – Texas oil billionaire T. Boone Pickens has called off plans to build the world's biggest wind farm in the Texas Panhandle, the Wall Street Journal said.
Pickens said the wind farm project was scuttled partly because of the lack of adequate transmission lines to carry the electricity from remote locations to cities, according to the paper.
The oil tycoon had hoped to build new transmission lines but could not secure financing, the paper said.

I can only speculate that our government has refused to subsidize billonaire Pickens in his attempt to control wind power to his own profit and rate payers expense. I'm no expert on wind power or co-ops but some recent events have led me to speculate on the possibility of a local and perhaps national network of co-ops to harness this resource. This ought to be possible. Our local, Champaign/Urbana food co-op raised $250,000 to build a new store. How much could be raised to build a network of wind power generators, owned by the consumers, acrossed the country? I understand some of the complexities of this issue, for example how could power companies be mandated to buy power from this source at a price comensurate with what they charge us for it? This is merely intended to kick off a discussion, I'm leaving for work in a few minutes and will respond later this afternoon.
