I contacted my member of Congress, Nita Lowey, a week or so ago with a note expressing my feelings about the health care debate in America and today I was surprised to find an e-mail back, which I am posting below. I'm really glad to know my Congress person supports real health care reform and also that she actually responds to people.
This was her note back.
Dear Mr. XXXXX:
Thank you for contacting me to convey your views on health care reform. I appreciate having the benefit of your views, and I welcome the opportunity to respond.
Forty-seven million Americans live without health insurance, and millions more are chronically underinsured. Premiums have risen 73% over the last five years, and despite the fact that the United States spends more per capita on health care than any other country in the world, we consistently rank among the worst in preventing deaths caused by treatable cancers, diabetes, and heart disease. At this time of economic uncertainty, we cannot waiver in our commitment to the principle that every American, regardless of household income, has a right to quality, affordable health care.
I strongly support ensuring universal access to our health care system and have advocated for an approach that would give Americans the option to continue their current coverage or enroll in the same health care plan available to Members of Congress and federal employees. By increasing competition in the health insurance market, the creation of a public health insurance option would expand coverage and reduce costs. I also believe that we must increase our focus on prevention efforts to decrease chronic disease and advance health information technology to improve patient safety and our health care system's efficiency.
A serious national dialogue about improving our health care system is long overdue. Please be assured of my commitment to ensuring that all Americans have affordable access to the world-class care they deserve.
Thank you again for sharing your thoughts with me. If you would like more information on this or other issues, or to sign up for my regular e-newsletter, visit my website at www.lowey.house.gov. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I can help you in any way.
Sincerely,
Nita Lowey
Member of Congress
So, thanks, Nita. Glad to know you're fighting for us.
I think it's important not only to challenge those on the other side, but also to give a shout out and encouragement to the folks who are fighting for us. Good on ya Nita!
