It has been more than a year since Hillary Clinton conceded the Primary election to Obama. A year ago, FOX was still featuring PUMAs. McCain was still expecting disillusioned Hillary supporters to defect to him and his muse, Sarah Palin. The possibility that Clinton would sabotage the Democratic convention was still giving hope to the Right Wing.
None of it came to pass. Hillary Clinton is a team player. She has supported Obama all the way. And in return he gave her the best job in his administration, apart from the Vice Presidency. No one said she didn't earn it. And Clinton has continued to be a loyal Cabinet member. It is time to say
Thank You, Hillary.
There are people trying to stir up trouble between Obama and Clinton. Here is Peggy Noonan, she of the "Read My Lips: No New Taxes" fame:
Sooner or later Mr. Obama is going to get in trouble, sooner or later the trouble will take hold and settle in, and sooner or later she will be the unsullied one who quietly did her duty in spite of the slights to which she's been subjected. And when that happens, she will emerge—reluctantly, painfully—as the Democratic alternative. The one who almost won, who knew—who learned the hard way—that you can't do everything all at once, that it's the economy, stupid.
It must be hard sitting on the sidelines, watching the remnants of the GOP being taken over by Sarah The Huntress. It is the economy stupid, and your boys fucked it up royally. And don't you think anyone has forgotten it. As for slights she has suffered, what exactly are they?
The NYTimes has helpfully compiled a list of grievances. It appears that the Whitehouse has appointed one of her supporters (Dennis Ross) to the National Security Council, moving him from the State Department. So? Maybe this is a victory for Clinton instead of a scheme to weaken her. Clinton's choice for Ambassador to Japan was passed over and the job went to a fundraiser from Silicon Valley. Not the first time a fundraiser was rewarded with an Ambasadorship. Noonan archly observes that Clinton missed the G-8 summit and the Russia trip. A broken elbow was the reason, not any attempt to elbow her aside.
Mrs. Clinton has told colleagues about a recent phone conversation with Henry A. Kissinger, a secretary of state who was not sidelined, in which he told her he could not recall a time when there appeared to be less friction between the State Department and the White House. Mr. Kissinger confirmed the account.
Things could be worse. Not too long ago, the Sec Def and Sec State were at each other's throats over the conduct of the Iraq war. The VP was ordering assasinations. The Sec State was at the UN presenting false evidence that Iraq had WMD.
In her speech, Hillary Clinton said:
We have the right strategy, the right priorities, the right policies (and) the right president.
Yes we do. And the right Secretary of State.
Also. Hillary Clinton does not quit under pressure.
