"I’m Representative Reasonable, and I’m glad we have the chance to get together with you today to discuss the important issues we’re working on back in Washington. But before we begin, I have some reminders for everyone. Any shouting over other constituents who are trying to speak, any booing or chanting, any attempts to dominate the floor to prohibit others from expressing their concerns, and I’ll end these proceedings immediately. And I’ll go back to my office and use this time to review the letters and phone messages from constituents who cared enough to contact me. And that would be too bad, because face-to-face interaction between representatives and constituents has always been important to our democracy. But we will not allow a noisy minority to hijack these proceedings."
"Opposition is a healthy and necessary part of achieving consensus in a functioning democracy. But behaving in disruptive ways, including shouting, booing, interrupting, and spreading false information, is counterproductive and will not be tolerated. I will not waste the time of all those respectful people who took the time to attend this meeting.
I also remind everyone here that in these challenging times, the independent and centrist voters are watching very carefully. I believe they will most likely ally themselves with those who represent their interests with good American cooperation and dignity. If you hope to convince these centrists and independents to join your way of thinking, angry outbursts and obstructions of the democratic process will probably not work in your favor on Election Day.
You elected me to do more than count a show of hands on every issue and vote accordingly. You elected me to use my judgment as I represent you. I can’t do that effectively if we are unable to confer on the issues that affect our great nation because a few people intend to disrupt these conversations with childish behavior.
I look forward to your questions and comments. Now, here’s what we’ve been working on back in Washington."
