Fear is what is driving these healthcare debates, and it is not a fear of Government Controlled Health Care. It is a fear of the changing social structure.
Let's be honest with ourselves the anger at these healthcare debates is not about healthcare. It is not about "death panels" and killing off the elderly. It is about a group of white people feeling their position in the world slipping away. It is about the white people who have always believed the country is what it is because of them; they believe they have always held the cards and dealt them as they see fit. These people have racism and bigotry hard wired into their DNA as it is generational, environmental and has in their lives been as American as apple pie. In their soul they are disgusted, in disbelief, confused and afraid that an African American man is calling the shots, directly affecting their way of life, telling them what is good for them; and they are doing everything in their power to dehumanize him and his Presidency; and what better way than comparing him to Hitler.
Living in a position of privilege is often not acknowledged until that position is threatened and right now these people feel threatened that the privilege that they benefit from every day might be taken away. I do not believe that debating these people about healthcare is the right way to expend our political energy. The large debate, the debate that should be brought up at these town halls and the question directly posed to these people is "what are you REALLY afraid of." If they want to bring racist signs, and refer to Pres. Obama's race during these rallies then let's talk about race. If they want to refer to the Pres. as Hitler let's school them on the difference between facism and socialism and how they continually confuse the two. Let's address their real fears of being led by a Black Man; so they can be exposed for what they really are. This is not about healthcare this is about racism and it is time to address it head on.
