Today I was in a courtroom for a brief hearing.
Right above Her Honor's head read in pominent wording so one couldn't miss it, "In God We Trust."
The lettering, frankly, was huge.
I would have prefered that it simply read "We the People" or "E Pluribus Unim" or even the "I Love NY."
Why can't religion just stay home???
Beliefs about god or lack thereof are extremely personal. I won't share mine in this diary. Frankly, what I believe or don't believe is nobody's business but my own.
There was nothing else in this courtroom but a flag and a framed copy of the Declaration of Independence. The replica hanged crooked and off to the side. The courtroom had no flag of the State of New York.
How about the motto of our great State, just the word "Excelsior?" Nope.
In God We Trust was all by itself. It wasn't part of any mosaic of law givers or legal history. I felt like I was not in a courtroom, but a church.
Yes, I was offended.
Anyone else have similar observations?
Who is responsible for courtroom decoration? Is it the Judge? The court administration?
Help me. What is the law on this?
