I am so upset right now I can't even see straight. I hate this. The mother of a friend of my kids who just dropped him off is One of Them. The wing-nuts. The it's Socialism. The Government-is-Bad. But get this - she's on BadgerCare - Wisconsin's version of public option. And she is against the public option. But there was no discussing. I'm shaking right now. I am so upset, nothing worked, no logic, nothing. And if there is no getting through to someone ON the public option, then what hope is there?

I ended up just walking away. Help me, I'm still shaking.
Here were her talking points:
- The 45 million people who do not have health insurance is bogus. Most of those people are "illegals."
- Those that are not illegals do not deserve a public option, because they never paid taxes, anyway. Whereas she and her husband are taxpayers, her husband has a job, so they deserve BadgerCare. She hangs out at BadgerCare health care sites and she knows that these "other people" are no good.
- The tables that show that US has the worst health care outcomes of all industrialized nations are wrong, because they include abortions (WTF? I couldn't follow that at all). Plus the tables are just wrong because they are collected by the government and the government is evil.
- Any public option means everyone would be forced into a public option. And she knows how the care currently sucks in that option.
- When I suggested that perhaps the best thing to do then is to drop ALL public options, she said that then she and her husband would have to shell out thousands. Well, I said, isn't that what you are arguing? But no, it comes back to that she and her husband have been "paying into the system" and so they deserve what little they are getting. But most people don't deserve.
- Public care sucks. I tried to point out that a public option means public payed, not publicly delivered, but no, no, no. Public at all sucks. When I pointed out that they do it right in Europe, she came back with some breast cancer statistic.
Classic classic classic. Typical educated white person who thinks that somehow they deserve what they've got, but all those "others" out there, well, DON'T.
Thanks for listening. I'm just so upset. I can't be her friend any more.
