The DKos Chess Tournament 2009 open thread is now open! Updated standings and results through Round 8 are posted below.
There is a chance that at the end of Round 8, there will be a tie for first place. As I wrote last week, most USCF tournaments employ what is known as the Modified Median to settle the problem of tiebreakers. Basically, you take the sum of the players' opponents' scores and drop either the highest or lowest ones (or both).
However, this method does not work for this tournament. Several players have withdrawn from the tournament, including opponents of those at the top of the standings. It is not fair to use the Modified Median as a tiebreaking formula when players drop out since that would unfairly benefit players whose opponents happened to compete in the tourney from start to finish.
So, if there is a tie for first place after this round, how will it be settled? With a blitz playoff. PsiFighter37 explains it like this:
2 blitz games (5 minutes apiece); if it's tied after that, one blitz game where white gets an extra minute and black gets draw odds. That's how it's done in the big leagues, I think it'd be fitting here as well.
For 3 people, a blitz double round-robin.
For 4 people, treat it like a semi-final, same blitz conditions as with 2 people.
Everybody in the playoff would play as both white and black against their respective opponents. PsiFighter37 explains it well for as many as four players, but I should mention that there is a scenario where there could be as many as five players involved in the tiebreaker. It goes like this:
1. MakeChessNotWar and Sharkmeister draw.
2. PsiFighter37 and cschess draw, or cschess wins.
3. brendanm98 vs. louisedkos ends in a win for one of the players.
4. mquander vs. vets74 ends in a win for one of the players.
This situation would leave the three players currently in first place tied with two players currently in second. If that should happen, it would be a five-player blitz double round-robin in the same way as with three players. The best record at the end of the round robin wins.
This whole discussion, however, becomes moot if one player emerges at the top of the standings after Round 8. We will know how that shapes up on Sunday night during the championship round. If a tiebreaker is needed, we'll need to figure out a schedule that's convenient for all players involved.
Last thing before getting to the standings: A humble tip of the hat to DynamicUno, who graciously accepted a draw in our match last night, even though I nearly ran out of time.
